An ironic crime has struck a North Carolina restaurant in Durham. The proprietor, Greg Hatem, hung a sign regarding the no weapons/no concealed firearms policy that they joined in alongside many other restaurants in the USA. And then – it was robbed at gunpoint.
Police are searching for three masked men who endered the restaurant through the back door, forced the employees to lie down. Two were even assaulted, but not seriouly hurt, while all the customers dining at the time were unharmed.
Recently, Chipotle asked customers not to bring guns into stores after some assault rifles were carried around while ordering burritos.Elsewhere, Starbucks closed one location due to a pro-gun demonstration near the site of Newtown Elementary school.
NC Gun Blog states “I am very glad that no one was seriously injured. But everyone involved needs to face one important fact: they were not murdered only because the robbers did not decide to kill them. Why? Because the owner of The Pit authentic Barbecue has banned guns in his restaurant…He went out of his way to make custom signs to make sure we gun owners felt unwelcome.”
Guns N’ Freedom blog said the following: “These signs only stop law abiding citizens from being able to protect themselves and make the establishment a bigger target for crooks. After all, why pick a target where people can shoot back at you?”
Research studies still suggest that this is not really as simple as that, and the twenty year study by Boston University professors reveals results which say that owning a gun does not deter violence.
“We observed a robust correlation between higher levels of gun ownership and higher firearms homicide rates. Although we could not determine causation, we found that states with higher rates of gun ownership have disproportionately large numbers of deaths from firearm-related homicides,” the authors write.
