County Not Allowing Open-Carry and Concealed Guns in Courthouse

Nueces County announced Monday that it will not allow open carry or concealed weapons on any of its County owned buildings, including the Nueces County Courthouse.

“Although the new open carry law is going into effect Jan. 1, it will not apply to the county buildings”, County Judge Loyd Neal said Monday. If “you have a license to carry and you are not a member of law enforcement, you will not be allowed to take it into a county building.”

Meanwhile, County Commissioners will also be considering adding more security at the courthouse. Some ideas being considered are adding private armed security guards while also adding additional armed deputies to ensure the safety of those who do business at the courthouse.

County Commissioners are also considering whether to move the security checkpoint to the entrances of the courthouse on Leopard and Lipan.

A decision could come in 30-45 days.
